Emily Beth Mungerson

November 23, 1922 - August 4, 2017

Harlingen, Texas, Emily Mungerson, 94 of Harlingen, TX, passed away peacefully Friday, August 4, 2017 surrounded by her devoted family. She is now singing with, and possibly directing, the angel choir. During this illness, Mom never lost her sense of humor or her sweet tooth. She was born in 1922 in Red Oak, TX, to Charles Clyde and Georgia Beryl (Eagle) Simpson. As a young child, her family moved to Chapman Ranch near Corpus Christi, Texas. When she was in middle school, the family settled permanently in Lyford, Texas. In 1954, Emily married Norman (Jim) Mungerson. They celebrated 57 years of marriage before his passing in December of 2011 Emily is preceded in death by her husband, and her parents, as well as her daughter Georgia Ann Gibson, her step-son Jamie Carter, and her siblings Edwin Simpson, Doris Cooley, and Jake Simpson. She is survived by her daughters, Valorie (Robert) Garza, Leah (Butch) Harding, Marilyn Mungerson (Jeff Alley). Also surviving are her son-in-law, Bob Gibson and daughter-in-law, Melinda Carter. Emily was the grandma every kid dreams of having. She is survived by John Michael (Lupita) Garza, Luke (Cody) Harding, Aaron (Sarah Yeomans) Garza, Paul (Kim) Harding, Anne-Elizabeth (Billy) Leo, Charles (Victoria) Garza, Meredith Alley, and Christopher Alley. Also Surviving are her step-granddaughters Jenna Vardell and Megan Carter. Her legacy also includes four great grandchildren: Isabelle Garza, Emily Harding, Avery Harding, and Christian Leo. Also surviving are her two step-great granddaughters, Molly and Grace Vardell. A final member of her family is her devoted caregiver, Tina Sanchez. Music was always an integral part of Emily's life. As a child, she sang with family and friends around the player piano in their house and in high school she was the first ever drummajor of the Lyford High School Band. She also served her church, the FUMC of Lyford, as the "temporary volunteer choir director" for 56 years. Over the years, Emily organized and directed numerous community Christmas Cantadas. She only handed over her duties to her daughter, Leah, when she could no longer stand up to direct. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. Oladayo Sanusi (who was loved by our Mom), Dr. Bonnie Villarreal and staff of Rio Vista Dentistry, the staffs of Valley View Independent Living, Valley View Assisted Living and Memory Care, and the wonderful staff of Kindred Hospice, who helped us through this difficult time and helped Mom pass with peace and dignity. Per her wishes, she will be creamated. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Lyford, TX. A private family burial will follow at the Raymondville Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to the Lyford First United Methodist Church or Shriner's Children's Hospital. "Her children rise up and call her blessed... many women have done excellently but you surpass them all...but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised." Proverbs 31:28-30 Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home, 604 W. Hidalgo, Raymondville, Texas.
